Bangor Attorney Nicole Black Appointed to Second Term on Maine Victims’ Compensation Board

Bangor, Maine — December 9, 2025 — The Office of the Maine Attorney General has reappointed Nicole Black, a prominent Bangor-based attorney, to serve a second term on the Maine Victims’ Compensation Board. Black continues her service as the Board’s designated attorney representative, a critical role in the five-member body responsible for providing financial relief to victims of violent crime across the state.

Established within the Department of the Attorney General, the Maine Victims’ Compensation Board assists victims and their families by reimbursing them for out-of-pocket losses suffered due to violent crimes, such as medical expenses, counseling costs, and funeral expenses. The Board is comprised of five members representing the legal, medical, and victim services communities who convene monthly to review and decide on claims.

Black, an attorney at the firm Vafiades, Brountas & Kominsky, LLP (VBK) in Bangor, brings extensive experience in family law and civil litigation to the Board. Her legal practice is noted for its focus on domestic violence matters, protection orders, and advocating for the voices of survivors—an experience that aligns directly with the Board’s mission.

“It is a privilege to continue serving on a board that offers such tangible, necessary support to Mainers during some of the most difficult times of their lives,” said Black. “Ensuring that victims have access to the financial resources provided by Maine law is an essential part of the path toward justice and healing.”

Black is a graduate of the University of Maine School of Law and has practiced with VBK since 2017. Her reappointment ensures the Board maintains the legal expertise required to navigate the statutes governing victim compensation while balancing compassionate advocacy for claimants.
